Are you getting ready for a Night Out?
Spring is coming, and the warmer
months are around the corner. Memphians are given some opportunities
throughout the weeks to leave their heavier coats at home. Come
April, the nights will be warm, and in Cooper-Young, the people will
be out.
The Cooper-Young Thursday Night Out is
a monthly tradition in the hip community. Shops, restaurants, and bars
give their patrons discounts. The streets and entertainment venues
are filled with live music. And the citizens of Cooper-Young are
having a good time.
Started in 2008, Thursday Night Out is
an event held on the first Thursday of every month. “Have people
hang out and listen to music,” is one goal for the event, according
to Tamara Cook, executive director of the Cooper-Young Business
Association. “[We want] to just highlight the area.”
Phillip Stroud, general manager of
Young Avenue Deli, agrees. “It's just good for business. Get
everybody out.” Young Avenue Deli, a well-loved establishment, offers a kids eat free deal, with
the purchase of an adult entrée for Thursday Night Out. As far as
the crowds, which for restaurants can be up to 800 that night, Stroud
says, “Bring it on!”
Cooper-Young's Thursday Night Out
begins April 4th this year, at 5 pm.

Howdy all!
Welcome
to iLuv Cooper Young! My name is Hannah Smith, your blogger. I'm
a journalism major at the University of Memphis. I've lived in
Memphis for most of my 21 years of living, and plan to stay here for
years to come. I've always felt that you either love Memphis, or you
hate it. And well, I love it! I have interests in writing, reading,
roller derby, fashion, blogging, and a variety of other things that a
single post cannot list. Nothing excites me more than seeing people
having a good time. I'm drawn to the colorful, unique, and abstract.
Beauty is everywhere, and I plan to enjoy it as much as possible. And
Cooper Young promises folks just that.
Now
for a little about Cooper Young. The
neighborhood of Cooper Young is a constantly growing mecca of cool,
right in Mid-Town. In 1989, the businesses in CY flourished, and with
it came the Cooper- Young Business Association, an organization,
which helped shaped Cooper Young to the hip hang out that it is
today. The early 1920's neighborhood grew with it's people, turning
it into a vibrant, colorful and youthful hang out for everyone to
enjoy in the middle of Memphis. The distinctive houses, unique shops,
and great entertainment venues draw people to Cooper Young. With
lots of great restaurants, bars, boutiques, and historic
landmarks, it is a wonderful place to explore and live. Not to
mention, Cooper Young is the Eco-friendly neighborhood of Memphis.
I,
personally, do not live in historic Cooper-Young, but have an avid
interest in the neighborhood. So as we go along in this blog,
exploring and enjoying, all of my initial reactions will be real.
